The scene was described as chaotic, with bystanders fleeing in panic as gunfire erupted in the densely populated areas.

Police Confirm Incident, Describe Deceased as Wanted Cultists

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Speaking on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that all the deceased were known cultists who had been on the police radar for some time.

“The command can confirm the murder of four individuals and five others who sustained injuries. All involved are suspected cult members belonging to opposing groups,” Ayanlade said.

“We urge the public to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities. Security personnel are on ground to maintain peace and protect lives and property.”

Police Launch Raids, Arrest Suspects Linked to Cult Violence

In response to the deadly clash, police operatives carried out a raid in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28, targeting locations believed to be strongholds of the cultists. The operation, which took place in New Garage, Ayeyemi, involved breaking into suspected hideouts and making arrests.

SP Ayanlade defended the aggressive approach taken by the police during the raid:

“Desperate times require desperate actions. Anyone arrested during this operation has ties to the recent violence. If any of our officers acted improperly, they will be dealt with accordingly. However, if they acted within the bounds of the law, they deserve commendation.”

Increased Police Presence in Affected Areas

Security forces have since intensified patrols in flashpoint areas, particularly New Garage and Ayeyemi, which authorities believe to be the base of one of the cult factions. The police have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further escalation of violence in the city.
