Security in LAUTECH Areas: An Age-Long Menace – All Hands Must Be on Deck By Rafiu Ibrahim

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, established more than three (3) decades ago, has long been plagued by insecurity, manifesting in cases of armed robbery, rape, theft, and other criminal activities in areas surrounding the University. The prevalence of these incidents, particularly around hostels and business ventures, has been a significant concern for students, residents, and stakeholders. However, through strategic interventions by various actors, there has been a noticeable decline in insecurity, warranting commendation of the current university management. Nonetheless, to achieve lasting security in LAUTECH areas, all hands must remain on deck.

*Security Challenges in LAUTECH Areas*

The off-campus nature of LAUTECH’s student residence structure poses unique security challenges. Unlike universities with centralized hostels, students in LAUTECH reside in private accommodations scattered across the university environment, making them more vulnerable to criminal activities. Over the years, cases of armed robbery, burglary, and sexual assaults have instilled fear among students and business owners, adversely affecting their well-being and economic activities.

*Commendable Efforts of the Present University Management*

The present university management deserves commendation for its proactive approach to tackling insecurity. Under their leadership-the current Vice Chancellor, Professor R. O. Rom Kalilu, crime rates have significantly declined due to collaborations with security agencies, stakeholders, and local vigilante groups. The introduction of surveillance systems, improved street lighting, and enhanced police patrols around student-dominated areas have contributed immensely to the relative peace now enjoyed in the university’s environs. These efforts have restored confidence among students and business operators, promoting a more conducive learning and commercial environment.

*Security Strategies for a Lasting Solution*

To completely eradicate insecurity in LAUTECH areas, a multi-stakeholder approach is essential. Below are some key security strategies that should be adopted:

*1. Strengthening Security Patrols and Surveillance:* Regular patrols by security agencies should be intensified, with increased presence in crime-prone areas. The installation of more CCTV cameras around hostels and business centers will serve as both a deterrent and an investigative tool against criminal activities.
