2025: AYVDi calls for intensive enforcement of anti-FGM laws in Kwara
As the world marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) on February 6, an Ilorin-based NGO, Advocacy for Youth and Vulnerable Development Initiative (AYVDi) has call for stricter enforcement of anti-FGM laws in Kwara State and across Nigeria.
In the statement released by the organisation and signed by the Excutive Director, Ahmed Adebowale, he said that despite the enactment of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act 2015 by the federal government and its domestication in Kwara State in 2020, FGM remains a serious concern in the state.
AYVDi emphasized the urgent need for robust enforcement mechanisms to curb the practice, which continues to endanger the lives and well-being of women and girls.
According to the 2021 Nigeria Multi Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2021), the prevalence of FGM among women in Kwara increased from 55% in 2016 to 58% in 2021, while the rate among girls remained at 35%. These figures highlight the persistent challenge of FGM in the state, with Moro Local Government Area recording some of the highest cases.
In line with the 2025 global theme, “Step Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM”, AYVDi reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness, engaging stakeholders, and advocating for full enforcement of legal protections to eliminate the practice.
“We must ensure that the laws are not just on paper but actively enforced to protect girls and women from this harmful practice,” statement read.
The organization called on the Kwara State Government, law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and civil society groups to work together in enforcing the anti-FGM laws and holding perpetrators accountable.
As Nigeria joins the global fight to #EndFGM, AYVDi urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts to protect the rights and dignity of women and girls, ensuring a future free from harmful traditional practices.
