This Initiative is a Lifeline for Our Farmers, Says Hon. Tunde Taoheed Olayiwola as Oyo Govt Launches Free PPR Vaccination in Irepo

The Oyo State Government, under its Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative, has commenced the free Pestes des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccination program in Irepo Local Government. The program, launched today at the Irepo Local Government Secretariat, is designed to protect sheep and goats from disease, support local farmers, and boost food security.

Speaking during the event, the Executive Chairman of Irepo Local Government, Hon. Tunde Taoheed Olayiwola, described the initiative as a significant step toward agricultural sustainability and economic recovery. “This initiative is a lifeline for our farmers. It demonstrates the commitment of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, to using agriculture as a key driver of economic recovery. It will not only protect our livestock but also secure the livelihoods of our farmers and ensure protein availability for our people,” he stated.

Hon. Olayiwola, accompanied by the Vice Chairman, Sunday Olanipekun Oyewole, and the entire cabinet, pledged the local government’s support for the program. He called on all sheep and goat farmers in Irepo to take advantage of the free vaccination, emphasizing the importance of their cooperation for the program’s success.

Dr. Akibu, an Animal Epidemiologist from the Department of Veterinary Services, explained the vaccination’s importance in preventing PPR outbreaks, a disease that poses significant threats to livestock. Kola Badmus, the Director of Public Relations and Strategy at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, reiterated that the program aligns with the Government’s broader strategy to ensure sustainable agriculture and economic growth in Oyo State.

The vaccination campaign will run across all 33 LGAs of the state until December 20, 2024. Farmers in Irepo Local Government expressed their gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging the efforts of the Oyo State Government in addressing their challenges and promoting food security.
