Oyo majority leader Co-sponsored motion on adoption of 40 years of service & 65 years teacher’s retirement
The Oyo majority leader, representing Ogbomoso South Constituency, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, on Tuesday, co-moved a motion on the need for adoption and implementation of the new sixty five (65) years retirement age and forty years (40) length of service for teachers of Oyo state.
The Motion, which was firstly moved by Joseph Gbenga Oyekola, the Chief Whip of the Oyo State House of Assembly, representing Atiba State Constituency, emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in shaping the nation’s educational system and aligns with global recommendations.
The Oyo majority leader, who was also a co-sponsor of the motion, called on the Executives arm of the Government through Ministry of Education, Teaching Services Commission (TESCOM) and the State Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB and the Ministry of Justice to interface with representatives of NUT Oyo State chapter with a view to addressing specific areas in the harmonized retirement age for teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022 with a view to adopting the Act and domesticate it in Oyo State.
Adedoyin stated that the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022 was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, on April 7, 2022.
The signing, according to him, was sequel to the earlier approval granted by the two National Establishment Committees of the Federal Executive Council whose membership cut across the 36 federating units of the country.
He added that the major aim of the Harmonized Act apart from following the recommendations of UNESCO/ILO and Education International, was to invest on teachers, thereby committing them to an enhanced service delivery for the development of the educational system of the country.
The lawmaker urged Oyo state’s Executive Governor, Seyi Makinde, to expedite the process of adopting the federal directives, noting that the state cannot afford to wait and allow other states to take the lead at this time.
“Oyo state is known for upholding its “Pace Setting” motto since the start of the Omituntun 1.0 administration through historic initiatives, particularly during the Covid 19 pandemic when the state led and others followed”, he said.
