Ogunjimi slumps, dies during meeting

There was tension at the secretariat of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abeokuta, on Friday.

The tension came following the death of a union member, Sunday Ogunjimi.

The deceased had joined other workers to gather at the secretariat awaiting the outcome of a meeting between the leaders of the aggrieved workers and the government.

But, the unexpected happened as Ogunjimi slumped in the midst of the crowd.

He was reportedly taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where he gave up the ghost.

MOUTHPIECE NGR observes that the members of the unions had gathered at the NLC secretariat in Leme area of Abeokuta, telling the union leaders to address them.

They stood against the union leaders when the idea of canceling the strike was suggested, as the union members said that the strike must continue.

Some accused the union leaders of not defending the interest of the members while the negotiating their demands from the government.

This triggered an uproar with threats to attack the union leaders.

Some property at the Labour House were reportedly vandalized.

A joint team of security operatives was mobilized to normalize the tensed atmosphere.

The aggrieved workers also said they would beat the NLC chairman in the state, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole whose appeal was ignored by union members.

Bankole has announced the suspension of the strike following an agreement signed with the state government on Friday.
