Between B.sc and B.sc(Ed) Degrees: Any Dichotomy
_By Ahmad A. Adebowale_
The Bachelors’ degree B.sc are awarded to students who successfully completed an undergraduate course in the university or higher institution of learning. Invariably, A Bachelor’s degree with an (Ed) indicates an added professional training in education.
Overtime, there has always been a disparity between holders and students of these two degrees as to who is better and more skilled than who. This tussle for relevance take us to the crux of the matter. Hence, the question begs;
Is a B.sc the same as B.sc (Ed) as far as Nigeria is concerned?
Is a B.sc more advantageous than a B.sc (Ed.) in Nigeria?
As a matter of clarification, both, as far as Nigeria is concerned are not the same, the former only covers science field while the later, couple with scientific courses is majoring in educational courses. The advantage of a combined honours is that one will be allowed to pursue carriers in education field and also in that scientific field.
While some these critics goes on to contend about the superiority of their degrees, the disparities remain quite obvious and can not be overemphasized. If anything, a holder of Bsc with the Ed can be said to hold double honours.
However, it is important to note that regardless of the degrees, future jobs would involve knowledge creation and innovation, and people that are only equipped with skills found in the classroom would be a misfit in an ever-changing world.
The basic truth of life is that the skills needed to be much sought after and become more successful in life are not really found within the walls of the classrooms. Certificate is just a proof that students are teachable; it does not suggest what they are totally capable of doing. There exist full of possibilities when one thinks beyond degrees and certificates
Finally, be it B.sc or B.sc (Ed.) degree, it has little or nothing to do with the larger society where an English graduate is working in bank, our future career would require us to pull information from many different fields to come up with creative solutions to future problems.
