JUST IN: “More Trouble” For Makinde Over Selection Of Cabinet Members From ADC, ZLP, SDP

Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde is in tight corner to form his cabinet among three coalition – African Democratic Congress (ADC), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Mouthpiece NG recall that the three parties through a coalition came together in the last governorship election to kick out Governor Ajimobi and the members of the All Progressive Congress from Agodi.
The coalition unarguably led to the victory of Governor Seyi Makinde while also assisted all the party candidates for House of Assembly in some local governments.
Candidates of ADC, ZLP, SDP were said to have stepped down for Governor Makinde and the party House of Assembly candidates to strategically send APC away from Oyo state.
Following the swearing- in and inauguration, the issue of selection of cabinet members from ADC, ZLP and SDP has continued to deepen as the governor is yet to announce his SSG, Commissioners and other key appointments.
It appears unclear what the reason could be as none of the party members were in the list of those already appointed by the Governor. Except for the appointment of advisory council committee where some leaders of the parties were members.
It may be said that the Governor is In distraction over selection but the undisputed fact is that he’s in tight corner where any slight mistake may be disastrous.
According to The Nation, forming a  cabinet so early into his tenure is a huge task for the governor.
“The power-sharing formula agreed upon was 50 per cent for PDP, 30 for ADC, 15 for ZLP and five percent for SDP. The sharing, according to the agreement, will be at the state and local government levels.
“But upholding the agreement has been tough for Makinde as his PDP members are not dropping their guards at the local government level.
Although they are fully in support of the formula for cabinet and board appointments, the PDP members and leaders are insisting that it will be impossible to allow non-PDP members to serve as local government chairmen,” the medium stated.
The report further stated that members of the coalition are not willing to join the PDP which has further compounded the situation and made the implementation of the coalition agreement more difficult for the new governor.
“It is unclear if those appointed into the cabinet among coalition members will be willing to join the PDP after a while to guarantee their loyalty and ultimate sustenance of Makinde’s administration.
“Within the next few weeks that the governor will form his cabinet, voters and politicians in the state are watching how Makinde will cross the hurdle. His success or failure in managing the coalition may determine what to expect in the 2023 governorship election in the state.”
