Court directs INEC to resume CVR until 90 days to 2023 elections

An Abuja Federal High Court, on Tuesday, directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately commence the continuous voters registration (CVR) till 3 months [ 90 days] before the 2023 general elections.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who presided over matter, also ordered the electoral umpire to make sure that Nigerians who are eligible to vote are not denied the access to their voter’s card ahead of the forthcoming election.

The judge held that it was the constitutional duty of the electoral commission to make adequate preparation for the electoral exercise in line with the Nigerian Constitution.

“The case of the plaintiffs succeeds on merit,” the judge declared.

The Informant247 learned that Anajat Salmat and three other persons had dragged INEC to court as sole defendant in a lawsuit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1343/2022.

There plaintiffs, in the summons presented before the court, argued that the electoral commission cannot put a stop to the CVR which was against the required provisions of the law.

They implored the court to direct the electoral commission to re-commence the electoral exercise in readiness for the forthcoming general elections in accordance with the law of the country.
