One dead, another in hospital as building collapses in Kano market

Abdulkadir Nasiru, 20, a construction worker, has died, while Naziru Shafiu, his co-worker sustained injuries, following the collapse of a three-storey building in Kanti Kwari textile market in Kano State, yesterday.

It was reported that two of the three floors of the building have been done, while the third one was in progress when it collapsed around 12:35 pm.

An eyewitness, who preferred to be anonymous, said a lot of buildings in the market lack professional standards.

He said that people erect storey buildings without seeking professional advice.

While confirming the incident to newsmen, the spokesperson of the fire service in the state, Saminu Yusif, blamed the use of substandard building materials for the incident.

According to him, “We received a distress call around noon on Tuesday about the incident. A two-storey building under construction collapsed in Unity Road, Kantin Kwari market.

“Two persons were trapped inside the building. One Abdulkadir Nasir, 20-year-old, was rescued while the other, Naziru Shafiu, 30-year-old was recovered dead. The corpse was evacuated to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital.”
