Ondo Govt cancels June 12 celebration over Owo church attack

The Government of Ondo State has invalidated June 12 celebration in the state, which was originally fixed for Sunday, June 12th, 2022.

MOUTHPIECE NGR had reported that the Federal Government has announced Monday, 13th June, 2022, as public holiday, to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

According to Ondo state government, the recent attack on the innocent worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo on Sunday, June 5, 2022, necessitated the cancellation of this year celebration of June 12 in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said the decision was to respect the people of the state, who are still grieving their loved ones lost to the deadly incident.

MOUTHPIECE NGR had reported that on June 5, some gunmen attacked St. Francis Catholic Church, Owaluwa Street, Owo, during church service.

Forty of the innocent worshippers lost their lives in the church, several others sustained various degrees of injuries and have been hospitalized.

It was gathered that 61 out of the 87 survivors are currently on admission in different hospitals and 26 already discharged.

A viral video had surfaced online which indicated that the suspected gunmen had been nabbed by the joint force.

In the video were a crowd of people, suspected to be residents of Owo town, who surrounded the palace of the Olowo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, to confirm if the suspected gunmen were truly arrested on Thursday evening.

However, Ondo State Police has falsified the rumours that the suspected gunmen, who launched a massive attack on Owo Catholic Church, have been arrested.
