Strike Update: Await Further Development, ASUU Tells Members

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in a press release disclosed on Thursday that it has barred its members from participating in the 2019 general election processes. The Union also disclosed that the offer from the Federal Government towards meeting the demands of the union as contained in the 2017 Memorandum of Action (MOA) is still not touchable and far from expectations.

The press statement which was signed by the union’s President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, added that members who wish to participate in the 2019 elections can voluntarily participate but without using any material that bears ASUU or insignia that relates to the union.

ASUU Strike which commenced on Nov 4 will hit its 68 day on January 11, which students of the affected tertiary institutions have been at home. 

 The union president called on ASUU members to await further developments concerning the strike which it says are rapidly unfolding.

Excerpt of the bulletin reads: “Though some progress has been made with respect to discussion with Government agents (The Minister of Labour and Employment as well as Minister of Education), at the moment, the proposal from Government towards resolving the demand of ASUU as contained in 2017 MoA and Strike Bulletin 1 is still too fluid and far from expectations. Hence, it is the view of the NSCC that members should await further developments which are rapidly unfolding.
